Since 1977, Mountain Bookshop has been an independent bookshop in Sonora, California, serving readers throughout the Mother Lode.
Our welcome
Something meaningful is waiting on the shelf.
We are a place to discover a new favorite author, find the right book for a child, choose a thoughtful gift, or simply spend a few quiet minutes browsing the shelves.
For more than four decades, our goal has remained simple: connect people with books and products that add meaning, curiosity, creativity, and joy to everyday life.
“The book abode of the Mother Lode since 1977.”
Our story
More than a bookstore.
Mountain Bookshop began in 1977 with a belief that a local bookshop could be much more than a retail store. It could be a dependable part of community life—a place where readers are welcomed, recommendations are personal, and books make their way from the shelf into the hands of the people who need them.
